It might come as no surprise that the obsession with sports autographs is traced back to the Great Bambino himself in the early 1900s. While the inception of autographs dates back much further, and photographs and history of baseball autographs go back to the 1800s with the Cincinnati Reds, the athlete most noted for making sports autographs popular was Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth was so popular he was rumored to have made attendants and staff sign items for him to keep up with the ever-growing demand.

Babe is noted as having some of the highest-valued sports memorabilia to date. This includes the very first jersey he wore for the New York Yankees. Regarded as "the most desirable baseball artifact" in history, Babe Ruth's 1920 jersey sold for an astonishing 4.4 million dollars.
